Vintage "Wadhams" 10-Gallon Steel Oil Can by Ellisco

c. 1930s-1940s; Wadhams Oil Company / Ellisco, Inc. - Milwaukee, WI & Philadelphia, PA

Embossed 10-gallon steel oil can bearing the Wadhams name across its ribbed body, complete with its original fitted lid and retaining chain. This heavy-duty vessel was designed for transporting and storing lubricants or petroleum products, featuring double-seamed construction, rolled edges, and angled carry handles. Its substantial build and embossed branding speak to the industrial design language of midcentury oil distribution-durable, functional, and built for repeated field use.

Wadhams Oil Company, founded in Milwaukee in the early 20th century, became a regional fuel supplier celebrated for its distinctive pagoda-style service stations designed by Alexander Eschweiler. The container itself was manufactured by Ellisco, Inc., a Philadelphia-based metalworks company known for producing high-quality steel packaging for industrial and agricultural use.

Excellent structural integrity with uniform surface oxidation and a dry, matte patina consistent with age. Embossed lettering remains clear and legible.
